About this role

Sage is a mission-driven software-enabled company focused on improving care and quality of life for older adults in senior living facilities. The Software Engineering Intern will join the Edge team to build production software connecting physical devices with Sage’s cloud platform, including backend services, diagnostic tooling, telemetry pipelines, and operational automation.

What you'll do:

  • Design, build, and ship a summer project that solves a real problem for the Edge team, with guidance from your mentor
  • Write backend services in Java that interact with a fleet of thousands of on-premise devices
  • Work with Linux-based edge devices: flashing, configuring, debugging, and learning how software behaves when the network is unreliable
  • Build tooling that improves fleet observability and helps the team remotely diagnose hardware and connectivity issues
  • Participate in code reviews and design discussions alongside the full engineering team
  • Learn how a production IoT system spanning LoRaWAN, BLE, and cloud services actually operates at scale

What they're looking for:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Solid programming fundamentals in Java, Python, or another object-oriented language, with willingness to work in Java
  • Familiarity with Linux and comfort in a terminal
  • Curiosity about how software meets hardware: networking, radios, embedded systems, or IoT (coursework and personal projects count)
  • Bias toward tinkering: you've taken something apart, built something scrappy, or debugged something the hard way
  • Clear communication and eagerness to ask questions
  • Coursework or projects in embedded systems, networking, or RF communication
  • Experience with AWS or any cloud platform
  • A personal project involving a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, microcontroller, or home automation
  • Interest in healthcare technology or building for underserved users

Benefits:

  • Offsites, outings, and team meals
  • Office lunch and a fully stocked snack bar
  • Up to 2 remote days per week
