Position Duties

The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) is accepting applications for a Special Education Teacher / Teacher of the Deaf within the School for the Deaf.

This full-time position reports to the Principal, School for the Deaf, and provides standards-based instruction and educational support primarily to elementary and middle school students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and have additional disabilities. The position may also support high school students as needed.

The Special Education Teacher / Teacher of the Deaf develops and delivers individualized instruction based on student needs, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Colorado Academic Standards, Extended Evidence Outcomes (EEOs), and access skills. The position works collaboratively with families, educators, related service providers, and other members of the educational team to promote students' academic, communication, functional, social-emotional, and overall educational development.

• Plan and deliver standards-based instruction aligned with Colorado Academic Standards, Extended Evidence Outcomes (EEOs), student IEPs, and identified access skills.
• Develop lesson plans, adapt instructional materials, and provide individualized learning activities designed to meet the needs of students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and have additional disabilities.
• Conduct and utilize assessments to support instructional planning, monitor student progress, and inform educational decision-making.
• Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and engaging learning environment using appropriate positive behavior support strategies.
• Develop and implement accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies appropriate for students with multiple disabilities.
• Apply knowledge and skills in task analysis, progress monitoring, behavior management, curriculum development, organization and planning, technology, parent relations, and teamwork.
• Support the development and implementation of standards-aligned curriculum and instructional materials that address diverse student learning needs.
• Utilize technology to model, teach, and support students in instructional activities, including project-based and technology-based learning.
• Organize instructional environments that support collaborative learning and participate effectively in co-teaching teams.
• Participate as a member of educational and assessment teams responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating individual student goals and objectives.
• Serve as Case Manager for assigned students and ensure appropriate coordination and implementation of IEP services and supports.
• Utilize communication strategies that support student access to instruction and promote literacy development.
• Support students' social-emotional development and individual communication needs.
• Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, support staff, and administrators to facilitate instruction and student success.
• Provide consultation, in-class modeling, instruction, and support to staff who work with students with multiple disabilities.
• Communicate and collaborate with parents/guardians and participate in selected parent-focused activities.
• Participate in School for the Deaf, departmental, instructional, and other required meetings and activities.
• Participate in professional development, training, and workshops to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills.
• Positively contribute to the School for the Deaf and CSDB community, including school improvement efforts, strategic initiatives, and co-curricular activities.
• Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Deaf Education, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
• Must hold or be eligible to obtain appropriate Colorado educator licensurewith an endorsement in one or more of the following areas, or a comparable endorsement:
  • Special Education Generalist/Specialist; or
  • Special Education Specialist: Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
• Must hold an appropriate subject-area endorsement in Elementary Education or otherwise meet Colorado requirements to be considered in-field in Elementary Education.
• Experience teaching or working with children with multiple disabilities in an educational environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
• Must demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced (3+) skill level through an appropriate assessment tool and in accordance with CSDB policy and procedures.

Preference may be given to applicants who possess:

• Master's degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a closely related field.
• Previous teaching experience with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and have additional disabilities.
• Experience developing and implementing IEPs and serving as an IEP Case Manager.
• Experience with Extended Evidence Outcomes (EEOs), standards-based instruction, progress monitoring, and differentiated instruction.
• Knowledge of literacy development, instruction, and intervention for students using American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Listening and Spoken Language.
• Experience implementing assistive, instructional, and educational technology for students with disabilities.
• Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary and/or co-teaching environments.

• Knowledge of developmentally appropriate instructional practices for students with diverse and complex learning needs.
• Knowledge of standards-based educational practices for students with multiple disabilities who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
• Knowledge of appropriate curriculum, accommodations, modifications, and interventions for students with multiple disabilities.
• Ability to establish high expectations for student learning while individualizing instruction based on student needs.
• Knowledge of literacy development and instructional approaches for students using ASL and Listening and Spoken Language.
• Ability to effectively incorporate technology into instruction and support students' access to learning.
• Ability to use a variety of computer applications and educational technologies, including email, word processing, electronic calendars, presentations, spreadsheets, databases, learning management systems, and other instructional platforms.
• Ability and willingness to remain current with emerging educational and assistive technologies.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
• Ability to receive and respond positively to feedback.
• Ability to work cooperatively and effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Salary: Annual base salary is established pursuant to the applicable Teacher Salary Schedule and is based on qualifying education and experience.
