Direct and Indirect Patient Care

1. Performs speech-language pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed provider and administers various neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic, voice, and speech-language tests to determine a patient’s functional limitations. 

1. Establishes short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family.

1.  Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on results of the evaluation and established goals.  Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based on the patient’s progress and performance. 

1. Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of occupational therapy techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence, appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care.

1. Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff.

1. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.

1. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports (eg CCS, Medi-Cal)

1. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families, department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel.

1. Reports on patient progress at various rounds, clinics, and team conferences as indicated.

Educational Responsibilities

1. Participates in staff inservice education programs, staff and team meetings.

1. Participates in orientation and training of new staff.

1. Participates in, and provides, programs to the community and other hospital departments.

1. Participates in clinical precepting of affiliating speech-language pathology interns and clinical fellows, and in departmental education activities related to students in other health care professions (eg. Nursing, Medicine, Occupational Therapy).

1. Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing education and professional development.
