About this role

Job Summary: Incumbent decontaminates, operationally checks, assembles, and distributes surgical instrumentation, implants, supplies, and equipment for the OR, Nursing Units, and Ancillary Departments. Incumbent maintains documentation related to these duties. Incumbent operates and maintains sterilization equipment, decontamination equipment, and computer systems related to these duties. This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

50YesAssemble and package surgical procedure instrument sets following protocols established by electronic count sheets, professional standards, and other documentation from a variety of surgical specialties under supervision. Operationally check instrumentation for functionality and cleanliness.
20YesDecontaminate surgical procedure instrument sets following protocols established by electronic count sheets, professional standards, and other documentation from a variety of surgical specialties under supervision. Decontaminate and operationally check patient equipment for the OR and ancillary departments according to established protocols through the competent utilization of a variety of cleaners, disinfectants, and machinery. Maintain appropriate records of receipt and disinfection of key instruments and equipment.
20YesDispense sterile supplies to appropriate locations throughout the Medical Center. Maintain sterile inventory through par level maintenance, stock rotation, and quality assurance. Maintain documentation related to material dispensation including logs, schedules, and electronic systems.
10YesMaintain timely and efficient process flows through communication with outside departments and sterile processing technicians in other assignments. Assist other Sterile Processing Technicians in the duties listed above.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • High School graduate, G.E.D. or equivalent

  • Completion of an SPD certification training program from a recognized institution

  • General ability to operate machinery including sterilizers, washers and ultrasonic cleaners

  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

  • Good communication and customer service skills

  • Basic knowledge of computer systems including Windows OS, keyboard and mouse operation

  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology

  • Knowledge of standard precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • The ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate with nursing, technical, and medical staff
  • Ability to safely move heavy trays and equipment, lifting up to 50 pounds, and stand for prolonged periods of time
