Job Description Summary

The Student Grader supports mathematics faculty by assisting with the evaluation and grading of coursework for assigned mathematics courses.

This position requires strong attention to detail, mathematical proficiency, confidentiality, and the ability to consistently apply grading criteria. The grader helps support student learning by ensuring coursework is evaluated accurately and feedback is provided in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare answer keys and grading materials for homework assignments, quizzes, exams, and other coursework as directed by the instructor.
  • Grade homework, quizzes, exams, and assignments according to instructor-provided rubrics and guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of student scores and grading information.
  • Complete grading assignments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Follow detailed grading procedures established by the course instructor.
  • Provide comments or feedback on student work when directed by the instructor.
  • Communicate with the instructor regarding grading questions, discrepancies, or concerns.
  • Report potential academic integrity concerns to the instructor as appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records, grades, and academic information.
  • Perform other course-related grading support duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Chapman University student in good academic standing.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and ability to accurately evaluate mathematical coursework.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and apply grading criteria consistently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records and academic information.
  • Dependable, responsible, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks efficiently.

Desired Qualifications

  • Successful completion of mathematics coursework related to the assigned course.
  • Strong academic performance in mathematics or related quantitative disciplines.
  • Previous experience as a tutor, peer mentor, supplemental instructor, teaching assistant, or grader.
  • Appreciation for mathematics and a desire to support student learning.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, punctuality, and reliability.
  • Willingness to assist faculty and contribute to a positive learning environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Training will be provided on grading procedures, course expectations, confidentiality requirements, academic integrity guidelines, and departmental processes.
