Student Posting - Climbing Student Manager

Climbing Student Managers are primarily responsible for supervising and training Climbing Student Specialists and the Senior Climbing Student Workers as well as monitoring and supervising the climbing wall during staffed climbing sessions. Additional responsibilities include working up to two weekends per semester, attending weekly staff meetings, working special contracts, shadowing and running various climbing clinics. Climbing staff must be checked off to belay at U of MN Duluth's climbing walls. One semester of working as a Climbing Specialist OR Lead/Instructor is preferred for this position. Work Study not REQUIRED; 4-8 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities 

• Plan and attend as needed, further training on: Route training, sport lead clinic, clinic instructing, anchors clinic, rappel training. 
• Independently lead climbing wall, birthday party, team building, initiative, and low ropes contracts. 
• Participate and help in clinics for Outdoor Program. 
• Ability to route set and assess routes for risk to participants. 
• Clean and maintain the area around the wall and office. 
• Supervise climbers for unsafe climbing habits and intervene appropriately when necessary.
• Facilitate instructor training on the participant experience including welcoming, required form completion and initial education, fitting for climbing equipment, climbing and belay instruction, and inspection and return of harnesses, helmets and climbing shoes. 
• Additional tasks as determined by the Supervisor/Trainer and the Climbing Coordinator possibly including, but not limited to: graphics tasks, social media management, instructor training lessons, staff schedule development, equipment management and maintenance.

Required Qualifications 

• Current student at the U of MN (UMD) with or without work study 
• American Red Cross Professional Rescuers CPR/AED certification 
• PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) or equivalent experience 
• Checked off to top rope belay at the UMD climbing walls 
• Checked off to lead belay at the UMD climbing walls (preferred) 

Pay Range: $15.75 per hour to $16.75 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
