Position Purpose

The Student Success Specialist supports schools in identifying and addressing barriers to student learning related to attendance, engagement, behavior, and social-emotional factors. Working within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework, this position provides consultation, coordination, coaching, and technical assistance to school teams implementing supports designed to improve student access to instruction and academic achievement.

The specialist collaborates with administrators, educators, counselors, MTSS teams, and families to strengthen school-based systems, develop effective intervention plans, monitor outcomes, and promote equitable academic opportunities for students experiencing barriers to success.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

School-Based Consultation and Coaching

• Provide consultation and support to MTSS teams addressing student engagement, attendance, and behavioral barriers that impact academic progress.
• Collaborate with educators and administrators to identify patterns, analyze data, and develop targeted intervention strategies.
• Support staff in implementing evidence-based practices that increase student engagement and instructional access.
• Provide coaching and resources related to positive behavioral supports, relationship-based practices, student engagement strategies, and intervention implementation.
• Support alignment of LAP-funded services with district goals, MTSS practices, and academic improvement efforts. Assist with reporting requirements and documentation related to LAP-funded services.
• Maintain documentation and support communication of services, supports, and program outcomes.

MTSS and Intervention Support

• Support the development, implementation, and refinement of Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions within the district's MTSS framework.
• Assist school teams with identifying students who require supplemental supports due to attendance, engagement, behavioral, or academic barriers.
• Facilitate problem-solving processes that connect student needs with appropriate interventions and resources.
• Support teams in establishing measurable goals, progress monitoring practices, and data-informed decision-making.

Attendance and Engagement Systems

• Collaborate with schools to strengthen systems that address chronic absenteeism, school avoidance, disengagement, and barriers to consistent participation.
• Support the development of school-based processes for early identification, intervention, and re-engagement.
• Assist teams in analyzing attendance and engagement data to identify trends and improve outcomes.
• Partner with staff and families to develop coordinated approaches that increase student connection and access to learning.
• Provide coaching, training, and resources to parents and caregivers to strengthen home-school partnerships, build effective strategies for supporting attendance and engagement, and promote student success. 

Staff Development and Resource Support

• Develop and share resources, tools, and strategies that support educators in addressing behavioral and engagement barriers.
• Provide professional learning and coaching related to student engagement, behavioral supports, and inclusive practices.
• Support consistent implementation of district expectations and evidence-based intervention practices.
• Collaborate with district teams to identify professional learning needs and system improvements.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work, behavioral sciences, or related field preferred.
• Experience supporting students, educators, and school teams in educational settings.
• Knowledge of MTSS, positive behavioral supports, attendance interventions, and evidence-based engagement strategies.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and support continuous improvement efforts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting school-wide or targeted intervention systems.
• Experience with attendance improvement strategies and school re-engagement practices.
• Experience coaching educators and facilitating collaborative problem-solving.
• Knowledge of data-driven decision-making processes within K�12 settings.

Work Environment:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing.  The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Benefits:
 School Employee Benefit Board (SEBB) Eligibility determination: All eligibility determinations are based on rules in Chapters 182-30 and 182-31 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). If the position is anticipated to work a minimum of 630 hours in a school year, then that position would be deemed benefit eligible. SEBB benefits include medical, vision, dental, long-term disability and life insurance. Supplemental coverages are also available.

 Retirement Eligibility determination: A certificated position participates in the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) which requires at least 5 months of 70 or more hours of compensated employment during a school year to be eligible for Washington State Retirement. A classified position participates in the School Employee Retirement System (SERS) if the position is expected to require at least 5 months of 70 hours or more for two consecutive years (initially) of employment.
