We are seeking a Sr. Accountant who will be responsible for the preparation of recording, analysis, and reporting of financial data in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and other university guidelines. The Sr. Accountant performs routine and complex accounting activities requiring knowledge of systems, independent judgment and an ability to respond accordingly.  This position oversees activities on various accounts, analyzes past and current data and prepares expense projections and operational forecasts and assists with the annual external audit and quarterly trustee reporting. The Sr. Accountant is responsible for development, review and implementation of policies and procedures relating to joint venture accounting and reporting in the General Accounting department. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Record, classify, and summarize complex financial transactions and events according to accepted accounting principles.
  • Analyze moderately complex financial statements and reports. Extract data to create account reconciliations, financial statements and reports for senior staff.
  • Research and resolve moderately complex accounting issues and discrepancies, ensuring compliance with University procedures and policies.
  • Ensure account administration complies with applicable federal, state and local guidelines.
  • Ensure data quality of financial records and related data.
  • Monitor, verify, and reconcile accounts.
  • Develop relationships with departmental and University personnel to analyze information and make recommendations on the resolutions of issues in compliance with established University policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical and analytical guidance to departmental and University personnel.
  • Assist in training new employees.
  • Serve as a resource to other accounting staff with respect to account reconciliations, journal entries, and preparation of financial statements and reports.
  • Direct the work of lower-level staff as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Accounting Manager on special projects or tasks as needed.
  • Lead special projects and oversee special project work groups.
  • Respond to ad hoc, high priority reporting requests.
  • Managing the preparation of the monthly School of Medicine GAAP basis financial statements and the required journal entries.
  • Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations and assist with variance analysis.
  • Prepare selected footnotes to the annual audited financial statements of the University, as well as supporting schedules for the unaudited quarterly University financial statements.
  • Participate in the review and analysis of each joint venture’s monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages and annual audited financial statements, if applicable.
  • Perform daily accounting functions including reviewing divisional journal entries to ensure proper posting in the ledger.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education permitted by the JHU equivalency formula beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent


Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA or CPA candidate.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • Advanced experience with SAP or other ERP system.



Technical Qualifications & Specialized Certifications

  • Proficiency with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel functions, Word, PowerPoint, and various other applications.
