Suicide Prevention Graduate Assistant (50% PA)

Department Overview:

Suicide prevention efforts at UHS involve population-level, strategic initiatives at UW-Madison. UHS works to strengthen campus practices and policies, reduce stigma, cultivate a campus environment with supportive conditions/protective factors, and build the capacity of all members of the campus community to support student mental health and prevent suicide.

Minimum: 20 Maximum: 20

Schedule:

20 hours per week (50% appointment) primarily scheduled M-F between 9 am-4 pm with occasional evening and weekend hours per department’s need. Possibility for some remote work but a minimum of 60% of time spent onsite at UHS or in-person at campus events.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:

1) Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Population Health, Public Health, or a related field

2) Must be currently enrolled in a graduate or professional program at UW-Madison (through at least May 2027)

3) Experience with public speaking, teaching, and/or group facilitation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of evidence-based suicide prevention strategies and/or mental health topics

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Self-motivation and ability to track deadlines

Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Facilitation and/or teaching skills

Ability to effectively engage with and provide customer service to diverse audiences

Position Summary/Job Duties:

1. Presentation, Facilitation, and Community Outreach

- Assist in the development and ongoing improvement of educational presentations and training for students

- Deliver presentations and trainings to groups by request

- Facilitate group discussions

- Represent prevention team at campus events and support general outreach and partner engagement activities

2. General Programmatic Support

- Support population-level primary prevention efforts of team (policy, systems, environmental strategies on campus)

- Attend internal and external meetings, webinars, and trainings

- Research and literature review on topics related to suicide prevention, bystander intervention, population health

Physical Demands:

Lifting supplies (no more than 10lbs)

Traveling to various campus locations for presentations and events

Presenting to groups (might include room set up, facilitating large group activities, clean up)
