About this role
General Matter enriches uranium and develops low-cost enrichment services in the United States. The Embedded Software Engineering Intern will help develop safety-critical embedded software, firmware, control architectures, and data acquisition systems that operate enrichment equipment, while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams on integration, debugging, testing, and commissioning.
What you'll do:
- Assist in the development of safety-critical embedded software that powers General Matter's industrial systems with reliability and precision
- Help build low-level firmware in C/C++, Rust, and/or PLCs to control electromechanical actuators, process high-speed sensor data, and execute fault-tolerant control logic
- Support the design of control architectures, state machines, and data acquisition systems for mission-critical hardware
- Contribute to automated build, test, and validation infrastructure for embedded software
- Partner closely with hardware, electrical, and controls engineers to bring up new systems, integrate firmware with hardware, and troubleshoot electromechanical challenges
- Assist with debugging real-world embedded systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and other laboratory instrumentation
- Support integrated system testing and commissioning of embedded software running on production equipment
What they're looking for:
- Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar discipline
- Development experience in C, C++, Golang, Python, or Rust
- General understanding of embedded or low-level systems development
- Collaborative team member who thrives in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments and is eager to learn
- Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
- Exposure to data acquisition system setup, maintenance, or development
- Familiarity with electrical hardware troubleshooting or PCBA bring-up
- Coursework or project experience in digital signal processing
- Exposure to low-level communication protocol debugging
- Coursework or project experience with PLC/SCADA systems
- Experience in a fast-paced engineering environment or project setting requiring a resourceful, entrepreneurial approach to complete tasks within tight timeframes
Benefits:
- Interns will receive a monthly housing stipend.
- Interns are eligible for overtime pay.
