About this role

Responsibilities

 

This Technical/Research Designer performs highly specialized welding for state-of-the-art research equipment in the Physics Department. Additionally, this position designs and constructs state-of-the-art instruments used for research.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and constructing state-of-the-art instruments and tools to be used in research with precision tolerances are up to +/-1/10,000.
  • Selecting appropriate materials based upon material strengths, machinability, and use. Developing problem solving strategies in the construction of research instruments.
  • Utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) engineering programs in designing of research instruments in cooperation with scientists and researchers. Programming of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines through Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.
  • Aiding staff and scientists in in the installation and testing of equipment and instruments at the J.D. Fox accelerator laboratory and the Physics Department.  
  • Performing vacuum/cryogenic/tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding for high-vacuum helium-leak-tight connections with various metal materials. Responsible for appropriate designs for making high vacuum welds in state-of-the-art research equipment.
  • Performing preventative maintenance on research equipment and the shop to adhere to safety rules and regulations. Ensuring all equipment is used properly due to the sensitivity and cost.

Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)
