Department Overview:

Headquartered in the Discovery Building at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Tiny Earth is an international network of college instructors and students focused on crowdsourcing antibiotic discovery from soil bacteria. We support equitable access to education, data-driven research, global health, and environmental protection through instructor education, student curriculum, and community engagement. Our network is committed to expanding diversity in science and creating inclusive curriculum to support it.

Schedule:

8-12 hours/week. General business hours are 8:30am-5:00pm CT Mon-Fri
Student schedules vary based on the number of hours. We will accommodate class schedules.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $15.00

Qualifications:

● Database experience
● Coding experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required:
● Comfort in exercising independent judgment, seeking clarification from senior staff when appropriate, and reporting issues to peer and senior staff when they arise.
● Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and anticipate needs.
● Willingness to learn new skills and tools.
● Good time management skills, ability to track multiple projects and due dates, adaptable.
● Familiarity with Google tools such as Drive, Docs, Slides, and Sheets.
● Dependability and reliability in work schedule and communication.

Preferred:
● Preference for students who have experience working with tabular data, such as by taking a course in database design, SQL, or CSV data.
● Statistical software skills are recommended, such as Python, R, or Julia.
● Experience with website design tools are recommended, such as Wordpress, Sharepoint, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.
● Experience with open source coding tools are recommended, such as git, GitHub, Visual Studio Code, or Markdown.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

● Provide technical support for Tiny Earth databases, research projects, and their connected websites.
● Propose upgrades and configure new features to improve functionality.
● Clean and maintain data and connected web content.
● Use statistical software to analyze data for scientific reports, figures, and publications.
● Contribute to emerging data- and code-related projects, reporting, figure generation, and content generation.
● Participate in team meetings and discussions that relate to the projects.
