Tiny Earth Data Intern

Department Overview:

Headquartered in the Discovery Building at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Tiny Earth is an international network of college instructors and students focused on crowdsourcing antibiotic discovery from soil bacteria. We support equitable access to education, data-driven research, global health, and environmental protection through instructor education, student curriculum, and community engagement. ● Database experience
● Coding experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required:
● Comfort in exercising independent judgment, seeking clarification from senior staff when appropriate, and reporting issues to peer and senior staff when they arise.
● Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and anticipate needs.
● Willingness to learn new skills and tools.
● Good time management skills, ability to track multiple projects and due dates, adaptable.
● Familiarity with Google tools such as Drive, Docs, Slides, and Sheets.
● Dependability and reliability in work schedule and communication.

Preferred:
● Preference for students who have experience working with tabular data, such as by taking a course in database design, SQL, or CSV data.
● Statistical software skills are recommended, such as Python, R, or Julia.
● Experience with website design tools are recommended, such as Wordpress, Sharepoint, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.
● Experience with open source coding tools are recommended, such as git, GitHub, Visual Studio Code, or Markdown.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

● Provide technical support for Tiny Earth databases, research projects, and their connected websites.
● Propose upgrades and configure new features to improve functionality.
● Clean and maintain data and connected web content.
● Use statistical software to analyze data for scientific reports, figures, and publications.
● Contribute to emerging data- and code-related projects, reporting, figure generation, and content generation.
● Participate in team meetings and discussions that relate to the projects.
