The overall function of this position is to diagnose and/or repair and maintain the motor vehicles safety through accurate preventative maintenance, repairing and overhauling a variety of automobiles, trucks, tractors, road sweepers, aerial bucket trucks, etc. If you’re driven, collaborative and ready to make an impact—this could be the opportunity for you!

Job Duties:
Diagnose, overhaul and repair of all systems such as electrical, computer, electronic, brake, fuel injection, a/c cooling, heating, etc.
Performs final tune-up. Also sticks fuel tanks and oil drums for inventory purposes.
Locates and traces hard to locate defects and causes of malfunctions through listening, visual inspections and the use of a wide range of test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum testers, ignition timers, dwell meters, test stands, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscope, compression gauges, special feeder and dial gauges, etc.
Determine nature and extent of repairs necessary and selects best work procedures to accomplish repairs with little or no advice. Hooks up fuel, hydraulic, oil and electrical systems and makes adjustments to assure proper operations.
Gathers all technical manuals, in book or computerized form, to perform jobs in a timely manner. Ensures that all safety procedures are enforced.
Tears down and rebuilds components and assemblies (described above) by fitting and installing needed parts such as pistons, rings, hearings and gears. Rebuilds front end.
Aligns, meshes and connects repaired units to related mechanisms (engine and related clutch, transmission mechanism, etc.).

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional
Career Progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Trades Apprentice, Mechanic 1-3depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). The maximum monthly salary for the Mechanic 3 is $6,566. Please refer to the “Job Specifications” tab located at the top of the LA Careers “Current Job Opportunities” page of the Civil Service website for specific information on salary ranges, minimum qualifications and job concepts for each level.
Compensation:
Trades Apprentice $16.06 hourly
Mechanic 1 $17.18 hourly
Mechanic 2 $19.67 hourly
Mechanic 3 $21.05 hourly
A valid Louisiana Class “D” Chauffeur’s license is required
