The Transfer Center RN is responsible for coordinating and facilitating patient transfers into the health system from both internal facilities and external hospitals. Serving as a central communication hub, this role ensures timely, efficient, and clinically appropriate patient placement by collaborating with physicians, nursing staff, bed management teams, and administrative leaders across the organization.
The Transfer Center RN utilizes advanced clinical assessment, rapid decision-making, and triage skills to evaluate patient needs, determine the appropriate level of care, and coordinate admissions and transfers across multiple service lines. Strong emergency department and triage experience is essential, enabling the RN to quickly assess patient acuity, prioritize competing requests, and support safe patient placement in dynamic and high-volume environments.
This role requires comprehensive knowledge of inpatient and specialty service lines, admission and transfer processes, regulatory requirements, and patient flow operations. The Transfer Center RN applies expertise in EMTALA regulations and transfer protocols to ensure compliance, facilitate appropriate patient acceptance, and support seamless transitions of care throughout the health system.
Working collaboratively with referring providers, receiving physicians, emergency departments, inpatient units, and operational leaders, the Transfer Center RN serves as a key resource in managing patient throughput and access to care. This position balances clinical priorities, available resources, and organizational capacity while leveraging strong communication, critical thinking, and rapid clinical judgment to ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the most appropriate setting.
The Transfer Center RN plays an integral role in supporting quality outcomes, patient access, and operational efficiency through effective coordination, service-line expertise, and proactive collaboration across the continuum of care.
Required: Certifications/Licenses/Experience:
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) in Indiana or other compact licensure state
- A minimum of three years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting or related specialty area preferred
Campus: Access & Logistics Center // Midtown
Shift: Evenings, part-time, 16 hours per week (2p-10p and 10a-10p shifts)
