Colorado Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons

Colorado Veterans Community Living Center (VCLC) at Fitzsimons is a beautiful 180-bed, skilled nursing facility serving Colorado’s veterans. We strive to honor and respect those living in our community through companionship and person-centered care while providing a comfortable and safe place to live. At Fitzsimons, we provide long-term care and short-term rehab and have a secure memory care neighborhood. We are conveniently located on the medical campus with UC Hospital and the Aurora VA Medical Center. Fitzsimons celebrates a low 14% staff turnover rate and substantial longevity among staff.


Position Duties

While in this position, you are required to work at your assigned work location during your scheduled work times. Please note: Work arrangements are subject to change at any time.

Provide safe transport of our resident to medical appointments.  Provide basic hands-on patient/resident care in a safe, clean, infection-controlled environment by dressing, grooming, hygiene, skin care, positioning, ambulating, transferring, toileting, feeding, transporting, and performing basic assessments (vital signs, blood pressures, etc.) while on medical appointments and/or recreation outings. Chart/document all of the above when necessary related to being outside their home.  Assist in the provision of recreational programs that meet the individual needs of our residents.  

Additionally, as a Health Care Technician, you will:
  • Coordinate daily schedules, perform pre-trip vehicle safety inspections, and safely drive state vehicles for resident medical appointments and recreational outings. 
  • Safely transfer and secure residents for transit using mechanical vehicle lifts, wheelchair tie-downs, and proper positioning devices (e.g., transfer/gait belts).
  • Ensure residents are appropriately dressed for travel, prepare necessary care and hygiene supplies, and manage portable oxygen tanks as needed.
  • Schedule medical appointments and procedures, coordinate transportation times with medical centers, and notify families of all arrangements.
  • Assess and address basic resident needs during off-site trips, clearly explain all care/movements prior to contact, and report any condition changes or safety concerns to staff.
  • Maintain strict infection control/universal precautions and perform basic emergency medical assessments (e.g., vitals, blood pressure) if off-site medical issues arise.
  • Facilitate assigned recreational programs, conduct spontaneous 1-on-1 resident visits, and accurately document program attendance and refusals.
  • Actively participate in ongoing staff education programs and complete all required online training assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Special Qualifications:  

Must hold and maintain an active CNA certification in good standing from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, as well as a current BLS Healthcare Provider Card.

Minimum Qualifications:  

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Conditions of Employment:
  • FULL BACKGROUND CHECK:  This position will have direct contact with vulnerable persons (as defined by C.R.S.27-90-111: "Direct contact" means providing face-to-face care, training, supervision, counseling, consultation, or medication assistance to vulnerable persons, regardless of the level of supervision of the department employee. "Direct contact" may include positions in which persons have access to or unsupervised time with clients or patients, including but not limited to maintenance personnel, housekeeping staff, kitchen staff, and security personnel.) 
    • Full background checks include:
      • CBI & FBI fingerprint check, Colorado Court Database check, Medicare Fraud Database, TRAILS Database check.
      • This position will also provide direct care to vulnerable adults requiring a CAPS check (as defined by C.R.S. 26-3.1-101, position provides services & support care to at-risk/vulnerable adults, including case management, clergy, physical or mental health services, safety or welfare services)
  • This position requires State of Colorado residency at the time of application (unless otherwise identified in the posting), and residency within the state throughout the duration of employment in this position.
  • Motor Vehicle Check: will drive a state-owned vehicle while performing normal day-to-day job duties 

  • Must possess a valid, Colorado driver's license.
    • Out-of-State Driver’s License holders must obtain a valid, non-restricted Colorado Driver’s License within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Will work evenings and/or weekends for recreational outings and/or medical appointments as needed (typically 1-2 times a month).
  • Must complete and pass a tuberculosis (TB) test
  • Must be willing to obtain vaccinations, as required by the State and facility
  • Required to have a current, valid BLS Healthcare Provider Card
  • Must demonstrate the ability to bend, squat, maneuver tight spaces, etc., and perform Safety Care interventions proficiently (pre-employment and continuously throughout employment
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must:
    • Disclose that information on the application.

    • Explain why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify you from the current position.

    • Provide your employee number from your prior State employment.  Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination, and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.


CDHS Selection Process Explanation
Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis (40/hrs per week). Part-time employment is calculated on a prorated basis to determine qualifications. Be sure your application specifically addresses your qualifications, experience, work products, and accomplishments as they relate to the position and minimum requirements.
