Transportation Equipment Operator Specialist

THE POSITION

As a Transportation Equipment Operator Specialist with the Department of Transportation, you will take your skills to the next level through challenging and meaningful work. This position allows you to operate specialized machinery that supports safe and efficient road maintenance. You will play a key role in keeping transportation systems functioning for the community. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports roadway maintenance by operating specialized equipment and completing tasks that help keep roads safe and functional. As a Transportation Equipment Operator Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

• Specialized Operation: Operate complex construction and maintenance equipment safely and effectively
• Equipment Maintenance: Complete inspections, repairs, and adjustments to maintain proper function
• Manual Labor: Use tools and perform physical tasks needed for maintenance activities
• Safety Awareness: Follow safety procedures and observe work areas to prevent hazards
• Crew Leadership: Assist with training and guide coworkers during assigned projects

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Overtime, dual-shift, and holiday shifts may be required during storm operations
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  
• Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• One year of experience as a Transportation Equipment Operator B; or
• Two years of experience in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L), Manual Transmission Restriction, and (E or O) restrictions removed. 
• All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
• All employees must obtain active operating certifications, issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for at least two of the following pieces of equipment within the probationary period or a longer period as determined by management: milling machine, fuel truck, oil distributor, rubber tire excavator (gradall), pugmill, stone chipper for surface treatment operations, track excavator with a gross vehicle weight of 25,500 lbs. or more, or a large paver.
• All employees must successfully complete and remain current with “Transportation Equipment Operator Instructor” and “Acting Highway Foreman” training.

Additional Requirements:

• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

• Ability to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
