About this role

The Office of the Bursar at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) invites applications for the position of VA Billing Specialist. This professional fiscal role is responsible for administering the billing and payment processes associated with Veterans Affairs and other military education benefits, and serving as a key resource for students, sponsors, and campus partners. The Office of the Bursar oversees university receivables, including sponsor billing, student payments, and cashiering operations. We are committed to providing outstanding service while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and stewardship of university funds. Candidates who demonstrate strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to student service and success are encouraged to apply.

As a key member of our student-facing team, the VA Billing Specialist administers the billing and receivables processes associated with UAA's largest sponsored student population—students receiving Veterans Affairs and other military education benefits. This position is responsible for sponsor invoicing, account reconciliation, payment research, compliance with sponsor requirements, and resolution of complex billing issues. The position works closely with students, sponsoring agencies, and other university offices to ensure timely and accurate billing, payment processing, and account maintenance.

To thrive in this role, the successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail. A solutions-oriented mindset is essential when assisting students with account-related concerns, coordinating sponsorship arrangements, and resolving complex billing issues. The ideal candidate possesses general accounting knowledge, experience reconciling accounts, and proficiency with standard office software, including Microsoft Excel, Word, email applications, and database systems. Strong verbal and written communication skills, professionalism in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and external agencies, and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and campuses are critical to success.

Experience working with Banner or other enterprise student information and financial systems is preferred. Experience administering third-party sponsor billing, including the use of electronic invoicing and payment platforms such as Tungsten, is also preferred. Familiarity with researching payment issues, coordinating with sponsoring organizations to support timely and accurate account resolution, and working with Veterans Affairs and other military education benefit programs is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, statistics or related field and 2 years professional fiscal experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
