Position Description

The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals.
 
There are various roles the VITA student worker may take during an assigned shift: Greeter, Site Coordinator, or Tax Preparer. All preparation currently occurs at pre-determined dates/times at North Campus.
 
Assignment and work schedules will vary as assigned on a semester-by-semester basis in various areas within the college. Openings may or may not be available at this time, however, after a review of qualifications, applicants may be contacted in the future.

Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary job functions herein described.  
 
Site Administrator/Coordinator
 
*Primary source for sharing knowledge of the program and assists with any issues that may arise
 
*Develops and maintains schedules for all volunteers to ensure adequate coverage, 
supplies and equipment at assigned site
 
*Helps taxpayers find effective solutions and responds to inquiries
 
Collaborates with co-workers and other employees to help serve taxpayers effectively and provide top quality service
 
 
Greeter/Screener – 
 
*Greets everyone visiting the site to create a pleasant atmosphere
 
*Screens taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they need and confirms they have the necessary documents to complete their tax returns
 
*Furnishes taxpayers with sufficient information and advice to ensure correct tax form completion
  
*Creates positive interactions and a professional brand image for the program
 
Collaborates with co-workers and other employees to help serve taxpayers effectively and provide top quality service
 

Tax Preparer
 
*Prepares and ensures accuracy of tax returns in compliance with relevant laws and regulations 
 
*Maintains records of all tax preparation activities
 
*Uses of electronic filing software to provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers
 
Collaborates with co-workers and other employees to help serve taxpayers effectively and provide top quality service

Qualifications

 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 
Strong knowledge of tax laws and regulations
 
Excellent organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines
 
Ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse taxpayer population
 
Excellent customer service skills, including patience and flexibility
 
Keen attention to detail
 
Utilize tax preparation software to complete returns
 
 
Minimum Requirements 
 
Current Wake Tech student
 
Tax Preparers must Pass the IRS Basic Certified Preparer exam (not required for the greeter/screener or site administrator/coordinator roles)

Pass the IRS Basic Certified Preparer exam (for greeter/screener or site administrator/coordinator roles)
