About UCOR: UCOR is the prime contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM), responsible for environmental cleanup at the Oak Ridge Reservation.

Job Summary: The Waste Packaging Specialist will be an integral part of the UCOR Beta 4 project team, responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient packaging of various waste streams generated during the deactivation and demolition of the Beta 4 facility. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict safety protocols, and a thorough understanding of waste handling regulations. The specialist will work to ensure that all waste is characterized, segregated, packaged, labeled, and prepared for transportation and disposal in accordance with UCOR, DOE, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform waste characterization, segregation, and packaging activities for diverse waste streams (e.g., low-level radioactive, hazardous, mixed waste) in accordance with established procedures and regulations.
  • Select appropriate packaging containers and materials based on waste type, characteristics, and disposal pathways.
  • Operate equipment necessary for waste handling and packaging, including forklifts, drum handlers, and other specialized tools.
  • Ensure proper labeling and documentation of all waste packages, maintaining accurate records for tracking and accountability.
  • Conduct visual inspections of waste containers and packages to ensure integrity and compliance with shipping and disposal requirements.
  • Collaborate with waste management leads, characterization specialists, and other project personnel to ensure seamless waste flow and resolution of any discrepancies.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Identify and report any non-compliant issues or potential hazards related to waste handling and packaging.
  • Participate in waste management planning meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for waste packaging processes.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and organized work environment in waste accumulation and packaging areas.

Required Qualifications:

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a related field plus two (2) years of experience in waste handling, waste management, package handling, or a similar industrial field.
  • Option 2: Associate's degree plus eight (8) years of experience in waste handling, waste management, package handling, or a similar industrial field.
  • Option 3: High School Diploma or GED plus twelve (12) years of experience in waste handling, waste management, package handling, or a similar industrial field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of waste segregation, packaging, labeling, and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed procedures and safety protocols.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently as required.
  • Physical ability to perform duties which may include lifting, standing, and operating equipment in an industrial setting.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with DOE waste management regulations and requirements.
  • Familiarity with the Oak Ridge Reservation waste management facilities and processes.
