Water Quality Specialist

THE POSITION

As a Water Quality Specialist for the Department of Environmental Protection, you will become part of a team dedicated to preserving the natural resources of the Commonwealth. This opportunity allows you to apply science, problem solving, and fieldwork to real situations that affect public safety. You will support efforts to ensure that oil and gas activities follow important environmental laws. It is a rewarding role for anyone who values environmental stewardship and hands-on work.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role focuses on monitoring oil and gas sites and responding to environmental concerns to ensure that operations meet legal and safety standards. As a Water Quality Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

• Inspection Work: Conduct field inspections of oil and gas operations and document site conditions using electronic equipment
• Complaint Response: Investigate citizen concerns by collecting samples and interpreting analytical data to assess possible environmental impacts
• Enforcement Actions: Issue notifications and contribute to enforcement cases that address noncompliance with environmental laws
• Plan Review: Evaluate operator submitted plans, including emergency response, and erosion control documents
• Public Interaction: Answer questions from citizens, operators, and agencies regarding environmental requirements
• Sampling Duties: Collect and preserve samples during spill investigations to support accurate analysis

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Coal Center. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the training program for the Water Quality Specialist Trainee; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which affords the applicant the required knowledges and abilities.

Special Requirements:

• This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Other Requirements:

• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. 

You must be eligible for selection in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
