DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under close to moderate supervision, read 5/8-inch to 2-inch water meters visually and accurately for the purpose of ensuring timely water billing.

The Water Service Technician I duties will include but are not limited to: 

  • Reports water consumption by locating and reading water meters to ensure an accurate reading.

  • Performs on/off tests on 5/8-inch to 2-inch meters to ensure meter is accurately read.

  • Identifies and reports asset status, such as damaged or missing meter boxes/lids.

  • Manually read water meters.

  • Report leak indicators such as constant flow of water while performing meter reading duty.

  • Learn/know how to read a Key-Map book and utilize it in the absence of GPS.

  • Reports meter information in the field using mobile application system.

  • Removes dirt/debris from meter boxes to ensure accessibility.

  • May perform other departmental duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.  

This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.

Position Duties

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS 
Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate.
 
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six months of general maintenance/work experience are required. 
 
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

Minimum Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with training and experience in meter reading, meter services and corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to water piping, valves, welding, and/or mechanical, ultrasonic and electromagnetic devices used by utilities to measure water consumption. Also, preference also will be given for proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and Google Maps.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
