Handshake, the college career network, runs a side program called the Handshake AI Fellowship. It pays students, grads and experts by the hour to test and improve AI models from AI labs, remotely and on your own schedule. You don't need any AI experience. Below: what the work is, what it pays, who qualifies and exactly how to land your first project. Everything is from Handshake's own pages and help center, checked on September 29, 2026.

What the work actually is

AI labs need people who know a subject to check whether their models get it right. As a fellow you write prompts in your field, compare and grade AI answers, correct mistakes with real sources and label data. A chemistry PhD might write problems a model gets wrong; a finance grad might grade a model's valuation work.
Handshake says it has paid out $100M to over 750,000 fellows. The labs stay anonymous: Handshake pays you directly and projects are confidential.
One hard rule: you can't use ChatGPT, Claude or any other AI tool to do the work. Handshake checks, rejects AI-written work without pay and can remove you from the program. Keep your drafts and notes for 90 days in case they ask.
What it pays

Every listing shows an hourly ceiling up front, and fellows say rates don't change mid-project. Your degree and field drive the number. A sample of what was open on September 29:
| Project | Pay (up to) | Degrees |
|---|---|---|
| AI Evaluation Specialist | $40/hr | Associate's, Bachelor's |
| Software Engineer | $65/hr | Bachelor's to PhD |
| Finance Professional | $80/hr | Bachelor's to Postdoc |
| Energy Professional | $80/hr | Bachelor's to Postdoc |
| Philosophy Expert | $120/hr | PhD, Postdoc |
| Visual Design Professional | $120/hr | Bachelor's to Postdoc |
| Game Developer/Designer | $125/hr | Bachelor's to Postdoc |
| Ophthalmologist, Anesthesiologist, Neurologist | $300/hr | Physicians |
The listing page runs 14 pages deep. Use the Degree and Domain filters to see only what fits you, then sort by Highest pay. Most roles want a Master's, PhD or Postdoc, but the AI Evaluation Specialist track takes Associate's and Bachelor's degrees.
Who can join

- You're 18 or older. No exceptions and no parental consent option.
- You live in the U.S. and have an SSN or ITIN.
- You're a U.S. citizen, green card holder, DACA recipient, refugee or asylee, TPS holder, L-2 spouse or H-4 spouse with an EAD.
- International students: F-1 works only through CPT or OPT, and only after your DSO approves it. Don't accept a project before that approval.
- Not supported: STEM OPT extension, H-1B, J-1, TN and H-4 without an EAD. Fellows are independent contractors, and those visas need an employer.
How to land your first project

- Step 1Apply and verify your identitySign up, fill in your profile completely and verify your identity through Persona. Some projects also run a background check.
- Step 2Wait for a project inviteHandshake matches you. There is no fixed timeline: projects open on a rolling basis, so silence doesn't mean rejection.
- Step 3Say yes and get selectedThe invite lists the project, length, hours and pay. Express interest, then wait a short review window for a confirmation email.
- Step 4Onboard and pass the assessmentAbout 2 hours of paid training modules, a knowledge quiz and a practice task. Retakes usually aren't offered, so do it in one sitting.
- Step 5Work, track time and get paid weeklyAfter your first task you set up Stripe and a W-9. Payouts go out every Wednesday for the previous week.
Four things that get you matched faster:
- Fill in every profile field. Matching runs off your degree, field and experience. Handshake says a complete profile gives you the best shot at invites.
- Name your niche. “Organic chemistry, 3 years of lab research” matches more projects than “science background.”
- Finish any open assessments. Unfinished ones keep you out of the pool.
- Watch your inbox. Invites come by email, and projects start and pause on the labs' schedule, sometimes with short notice.
How and when you get paid
- Pay periodMonday to Sunday
- Payout sentEvery Wednesday
- In your bankWithin about 3 days
Payments run through Stripe. After your first task you'll set up your payout account and fill in a W-9. You're paid on a 1099 as an independent contractor. Handshake may withhold some tax where the law requires it, but plan on owing the rest yourself and set part of each payout aside. If a payout hasn't landed by Friday noon Pacific, contact Handshake AI support.
Spot the scams
A popular program attracts fakes. Handshake only collects sensitive info through Persona (identity) and Stripe (payouts). It never asks for your SSN, bank details or password by email, text, WhatsApp or social DMs. Watch for lookalike domains such as “joinhandhsake.com” or “joinhandshake-careers.com” and any “project lead” writing from a Gmail address.
Put it on your resume
Handshake encourages fellows to list the work. Their suggested title is “AI Trainer – [Your Domain] Expert” with “Handshake AI Fellowship” as the company. Describe the prompt writing, model evaluation and research you did, but never name the AI lab: projects are confidential.
Done right, this is one of the stronger lines a student can add right now: paid, current and about AI. When you're ready for a full-time role or internship, ApplyBolt can tailor that line to every job you apply to.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Handshake AI Fellowship legit?
Yes. It is run by Handshake, the college career network, which says it has paid out $100M to over 750,000 fellows. Handshake pays fellows directly through Stripe. Scammers do impersonate it, so only share sensitive details through Persona (identity) and Stripe (payouts), never by email, text or DM.
How much does Handshake AI pay?
Each listing shows an hourly cap. On September 29, 2026 open projects ranged from up to $40 an hour for AI Evaluation Specialist to $80 for finance and energy roles, $120 to $125 for philosophy, design and game development, and $300 for physicians. Your degree and field set the rate.
Do I need AI experience to join?
No. Handshake says no AI experience is required. Projects pay for expertise in your own field, and every fellow gets about two hours of paid onboarding training plus a quiz and a practice task.
Can international students do Handshake AI?
Only in some cases. You must be based in the U.S. F-1 students can take part through CPT or OPT once their DSO approves it. STEM OPT, H-1B, J-1, TN and H-4 without an EAD are not supported because fellows are independent contractors.
How many hours do Handshake AI fellows work?
You set your own schedule. Handshake says fellows typically work 5 to 20 hours a week, and projects last from two weeks to more than three months.
When does Handshake AI pay?
Weekly. Work from Monday to Sunday is paid out through Stripe the following Wednesday, and it usually reaches your bank within about three days. You are paid as a 1099 contractor, so plan for taxes.
