Qualifications

Required

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • Some experience in cleaning HVAC units and boiler systems.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
  • Knowledge of the methods and skills in the use of equipment, materials, and tools appropriate for cleaning boiler systems or HVAC units.
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
  • Capability to estimate time and material needs, determine when a repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations.

Preferred

  • Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program.

Major Duties/Essential Functions

  1. Performs the skilled journey-level work required to clean boiler systems including tubes, fireboxes, breech, and base of the chimney.
  2. Brushes and scrapes the entire fireside of a system to remove soot and scale.
  3. Works inside of fireboxes and breach, as required.
  4. Cleans in and around the system with the vacuum.
  5. Cleans and services floor, ceiling, and roof units of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  6. Cleans all types of HVAC coils to include, hot water, chilled water, and DX coils with appropriate chemical cleaners as needed.
  7. Removes covers, filters, and fan blades as necessary.
  8. Cleans interior of the unit and its components by wiping, vacuuming, blowing out, and otherwise removing dust, dirt, and debris; assures that drain holes are open.
  9. Cuts and replaces or washes filters and reassembles units.
  10. Inspects and replaces belts and lube bearings located in rooftop units, air handlers, make-up air units, and unit ventilators, performs routine preventive maintenance.
  11. Installs and repairs various types of pipe, duct, or sheet insulation.
  12. Participates in setting up jobs and in the removal of equipment, trash, and excess materials after work is completed.
  13. Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials.
  14. Performs operator maintenance on the vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.
  15. Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
  16. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements

This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
