Cybersecurity interns work on everything from vulnerability scanning and incident response to building internal security tools. Common titles include Security Engineering Intern, Information Security Intern, SOC Analyst Intern, and Penetration Testing Intern. Banks, defense contractors, Big Tech, and dedicated security firms like CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks all run summer programs.
Getting into cybersecurity as an intern
Certifications like CompTIA Security+ or hands-on experience with CTF competitions (Capture the Flag) catch recruiters' attention. Know the basics: networking, common vulnerabilities (OWASP Top 10), and how authentication works. A home lab or write-ups of CTF challenges on a blog show genuine interest. Many of these roles don't require a CS degree specifically, so information systems and IT majors should apply too.
